Cinema Essay Submission Guidelines
-
We seek critical film essays and formal analyses that explore cinema as a distinct visual, auditory, and narrative art form.
-
Assume our readers have already watched the film; do not include plot synopses, character introductions, or consumer recommendations.
-
Focus your writing on the how rather than the what. Explain how specific cinematic choices (such as camera angles, framing, lighting, editing, sound design, or blocking) actively create the film's meaning.
-
Ground every thematic argument in concrete film technique; rather than simply stating that a character experiences grief or loneliness, demonstrate how the director uses visual or sonic choices to convey that emotional state.
-
Write a film essay, not a social or moral commentary; your primary subject must be the film medium itself, not just the real-world topics or character behaviors depicted on screen.
-
Skip introductory fluff and historical overviews. Open your essay directly with a clear thesis argument in the very first paragraph.
